Lead Instructors

Lead Instructors are veteran educators with extensive coaching and teaching experience. Many have coached students to national championships, developed curriculum, or led successful school programs. They’re ideal for advanced students, high-stakes preparation, or schools seeking strategic guidance. Lead Instructors are trusted to teach independently, mentor other instructors, and represent Debate Matters at the highest level.

Mike Bietz
Founding Instructor, Lead Instructor

Mike Bietz is one of the most accomplished debate educators in the country. He has coached 14 national champions and more than 90 TOC-qualified entries, building top-tier programs at both Edina and Harvard-Westlake. A former President of the NDCA and the first Asian American inducted into the TOC Hall of Fame, Mike combines strategic excellence with a deep commitment to mentorship and program-building.

Chris Theis
Founding Instructor, Lead Instructor

Chris Theis is one of the most accomplished combined competitor-coaches in Lincoln-Douglas debate this millennium. He’s a two-time TOC champion—the only one in history—and has coached at nationally recognized programs including Apple Valley, Lexington, and Marlborough. As Executive Director of Victory Briefs, he helped expand institute programming and launch resources that shaped debate education across the country. Chris brings unmatched strategic insight and a track record of developing elite debaters.

Core Instructors

Core Instructors are experienced and reliable teachers who’ve demonstrated strong pedagogical skill and subject mastery. Many have several years of coaching or instructional experience and can teach a range of courses or debate formats. They’re great for students at all levels and bring both structure and adaptability to their sessions. Core Instructors can run classes on their own and often specialize in specific age groups or event types.

Associate Instructors

Associate Instructors are talented early-career teachers—often recent graduates or former top debaters—who bring energy, relatability, and up-to-date competitive insight. While all of our instructors are independent contractors, Associate Instructors have demonstrated a strong alignment with Debate Matters’ core principles: clarity, ethical argumentation, and student-centered instruction. We maintain an active role in supporting their development, offering guidance and feedback as they grow into confident, independent educators.
